After migrating to the United States in 1852, this staunch defender of Irish Nationalism went on to serve as a Brigadier General in the United States Army, leading the famed Irish Brigade during the Civil War. He later served as Territorial Governer of Montana until a mysterious accident involving a Steam boat and the Missouri River permanently derailed is political aspirations, and all his aspirations for that matter. There is today a Montana county named in his honor.
